RE: General Membership Meeting Summary Report for  August 21, 2024


The following notes represent my personal summary of the August General Membership Meeting and ARE NOT OFFICIAL MINUTES. They are for the express purpose of keeping the members informed in a timely fashion. Since minutes must be approved at a subsequent General Membership Meeting, any updates which would require the use of the actual minutes would result in updates being one-month old.

The following was approved at the August meeting:

  • Minutes of the July 17th, 2024 meeting 
  • The financial statement ending July 2024 and the disbursements of $191,638.43.   Our receipts were in excess of our disbursementsby $72,721.89.  This resulted in our General Account being positive by $255,215.56.

The following motions were approved:

 

·      1) Motion – Approved a donation of $1000.00 to the ASARC - Breton House

       2) Motion  -  Approved a donation of $500.00 to the Alzheimer Society

      3)  Motion  -  Approved a donation of $1095.00 to The Royal Canadian Legion Ontario Command

      4)  Motion  -  Approved a donation of $1500.00 to Bob Soo Winter Carnival           

President Report


-        Mike reported that Algoma Steel is pushing to have people cross trained and assigned  between Slabcast and the DSPC

 

-        1.   The 5 Safety Grievances that were with Alex St. John. *

4 outstanding grievances to be dealt with by the Union - 23-0192, 23-0193, 23-0242, 23-0258.

 “Further to our discussion on Friday, November 3, 2023 the Union is proposing that the parties agree to first litigate Grievance #23-0194 on November 17, 2023. We would propose that the other above-noted grievances be held in abeyance and that Mr. Starkman remain seized of them.”

 

 

2.    Ask the members about conditions of welfare rooms and lunchrooms and if there have been noticeable improvements * Grievance 23-0194 adjourned. Erin Oliver will provide update on Welfare Rooms by September 30, 2024.

 

 

3.    Outstanding Health and Safety General Nature Grievances – generally being dealt with by AJ…waiting on document from AJ/Amy McMillan. *

“Had meeting August 1, 2024. Waiting on example of bundling of grievances.”

 

 

4.    Fatality Grievance Arbitration. *

“Next hearing is October 3, 2024, commencing at 10:00 a.m. The purpose of this hearing is to engage in mediation and, if necessary, case management”.

 

 

5.    Group Health Legal Action. *

July 30, 2024 - Cross exam of Mike Da Prat

July 31, 2024 - Cross exam of Lil Silvano

August 8, 2024 - Cross exam of Jody Stewart

 

 

Thursday, August 22 – Delivery of our factum containing the written argument explaining why we think you should be appointed representative and why an interim injunction should be granted;

 

 

Tuesday, September 3 – Follow up appearance before Justice Cullen to schedule a date for the motions to be argued;

 

 

Thursday, September 12 – Delivery of the Defendants’ facta responding to our factum on the representation order and interim injunction.

6.    Pension Arbitration with Tracey Henry - June 17, September 9 and September 18, 2025 *


-  Mike reminded members to be polite and respectful regardless of gender.


The next General Membership Meeting will be held on  September 18th, 2024 at the Delta Hotel at 7:30 pm.
