RE: General Membership Meeting Summary Report for February 21st, 2024

The following notes represent my personal summary of the February General Membership Meeting and ARE NOT OFFICIAL MINUTES. They are for the express purpose of keeping the members informed in a timely fashion. Since minutes must be approved at a subsequent General Membership Meeting, any updates which would require the use of the actual minutes would result in updates being one-month old.

The following was approved at the February meeting:

  • Minutes of the January 17th, 2024 meeting
  • The financial statement ending January 31st, 2024 and the disbursements of $314,160.10.   Our disbursements were in excess of our receipts by $41,402.35.  This resulted in our General Account being positive by $127,211.41.

President's Report

            -    Mike stated that the Union has paid $5650.00 as a retainer fee for SOTOS Legal Firm in Toronto to advise us and represent us

as necessary regarding Steelworkers being derostered at the Group Health Centre.  The orphaned members represent active                   Steelworkers as well as retirees and community members.

-  Many of the orphaned patients are Steelworkers that originally paid the $135.00 needed to pay back the loan of $800 plus

thousand dollars to build and outfit the Group Health Centre

-  Mike stated that we are attempting to resolve this issue however we are also checking whether a class action  suit would be

    an option.

-  A special meeting is being set up for the Utilities Department to address safety concerns.  We will let the membership know

the date when it is scheduled.

-   Mike reported on the layoff issues and that there were 60 members waiting to be called back.

-   Mike spoke on the upcoming elections.  As everyone knows this year is an election year.  Nominations will take place at our

General Membership Meeting March 20th, 2024.  The election committee will be elected at that meeting.  Normally we

recommend that the election committee be nominated and elected along with any others nominated at the meeting.  We

will look for a motion to this effect at the March Meeting.  Nomination for Unit Chair Clerical will take place at the end of

     February.

The next General Membership Meeting will be held on  March 20th, 2024 at the Delta Hotel at 7:30 pm.
